vericous veins?

So I don't know much about these; I always thought you just get them with age and typically front standing a lot. Well I was having a pedicure yesterday and the estitecian mentioned I had one vein along my ankle that was big and bulging and I should talk to my doctor about "constraining stockings" (can't remember what she called them exactly). Apparently pregnancy is the first offset of them for women and they can become painful and require work to remove??? Anyone able to enlighten me a bit more about these?
