How do you explain divorce/break ups? (Not mine!)

So we unfortunately have had a bit of this in our families. My brother broke up with his fiancee about a year and a half ago, but we didn't do a ton of explanation because Rosie was a lot younger at the time. Although she did ask about his fiancee when she met his new girlfriend, which was all sorts of awkward.

But someone in our family is getting a divorce, and I'm not quite sure what to say when Rosie asks where so and so is.  So far we've just done a basic, "He doesn't live with them anymore" type answer and try to change the subject, just because I can't find the right words.

What would you say?
