Crib soothers

Has anyone tried a crib soother to help their LO fall asleep without having to be held? They have so many of these ones that do little light shows but I'm wondering if they actually do anything. We have a sleep sheep and I don't think it helps us at all...in fact half the time LO wakes up as soon as the timer goes off.
