Thank you cards

So what is the general consensus regarding thank you cards for gifts you receive from friends for the baby?  We did not have a shower as this is baby #2.  I can't remember what all I got from who in the hospital, but would still be able to send a general note of thanks.  I wouldn't expect to get a thank you card for bringing one of my friends a gift to the hospital, but can't remember for the life of me if I ever actually HAD gotten one.  Thanks in advance!
