xp: DD will not go to sleep

She is so tired! She is tired around 8pm after bath, lotion and story then we go to my dark room and nurse and she falls asleep.  But she WILL NOT stay asleep.  Then it's battling all night long to get her back to sleep.  She cries when put down, but we can't soothe her back down.  Eyes wide open.  We did this for 4 hours last night And she slept terribly.  Growth spurt, perhaps? She will latch, but gets grunty and wiggly during this time, so she is definitely overtired...not hungry. But she isn't fussy. Just redeyed and staring and will not sleep. It's getting really stressful for all of us.
