Choking on spit?

Last night my LO woke us up with some coughing. When I picked her up she arched her back and seemed to be choking on her spit. (She didnt throw up). I patted her on the back and it only lasted a few seconds. She was fine afterwards and back to her smiley self. But it freaked us out!! Has this happened to anyone? And what can I do to prevent this in the future?
