Excessive bleeding...1st period after given birth

I feel kinda weird even asking this question given the fact that I am a guy but my GF is going through her first period since giving birth to our LO and she said she is bleeding way more than she normally does. Is this normal for periods after birth? I told her she should go get checked out ASAP to be on the safe side if she is losing as much blood as she says she is.
