Playard vs crib

Is anyone using a playard as a crib for your newborn?  My son is going to be 2 1/2 but I don't think he is ready to move into his little toddler bed that we have ready for him.  It seems like all of a sudden he is really attached to his crib so I don't want to move him out of it.  If you are using a playard, what kind do you recommend?  I didn't use one the first time around.
