How long do you try to burp?

Sometimes she burps right away, but other times I will try for a while, even trying different positions, and she just will not burp...just to end up spitting up soon after I sit/lay her down. My doctor said sometimes they don't need to burp, but I feel like she does most of the time but she won't - sometimes she falls asleep or just doesn't...Just wondering how long I should try to keep burping her?
