Pulling at ear - possible ear infection?

DS has been playing with his left ear for several days. I would guess its an ear infection, but he is not running a fever and he is not acting fussy. His sleeping has digressed over the past week and I have noticed that he is falling asleep faster in upright sitting positions (swing, car seat). Is it possible to have an ear infection without a fever or fussiness? DD had several and each time if was very obvious that something was wrong. I'm going to call the pedi today but wanted to get your opinions too.
