What are the latest "must have" gifts for newborns?

I need to buy a present for a friend who's due with #2 any day now.   She says she just needs little things like soft toys, rattles, things that didn't really survive the first kid.

My DD is 2, so I'm not so up on tiny baby stuff anymore.  I remember Sophie the Giraffe was huge on these boards (although DD never cared about her).  Anything else like that that's a little bit fun/different for a newborn??
