Need help with screaming maniac

My DD wakes up screaming from her naps or if she is over tired she will scream her head off until I can rock her to sleep.  I don't know what to do about it.  She makes herself so red, that I am afraid that she is going to hurt herself.  Often she will calm herself down for a moment or two and then start screaming bloody murder all over again.  The funny thing is that at night....no problems  She goes down without a problem and when she wakes up she will cry but nothing like she does during the day.
