BF- excited ineffective nurser

Anyone else have an excited ineffective on their hands? This nursing style describes by LO to a T... he gets so excited when it's time to eat sometimes he can't figure out how to latch or will latch and then let go and can't figure out how to get back on.  Inevitably he ends up screaming bloody murder in frustration, shaking his face and kicking like a maniac.  I have been trying to look for early hunger cues so he doesn't get too hungry, but even if I catch him very early it happens.  When he gets latched on and is calm he nurses like a champ, but by the end of the day he is usually pooped anyway and just can't figure it out.  Any ideas how to deal?  Tonight we gave him a bottle and he did totally fine, but I don't want to have to resort to giving him pumped milk every night.
