Anyone use a nipple shield?

I have been using one since the hospital and while the lactation consultant said it was perfectly fine to use it for as little as one day up to a few months I would like to slowly remove him from it.  The problem is my baby is a "lazy eater" and my nipple are flat.  I have a latch assist that will pull my nipple out and he will grab on and suck but not for long and I give up and put the shield back on.  Im looking for someone who has made the transition and any advice they can give.  He is eating plenty and gaining weight like he should.  I just want to be able to feed him "normally"
