Baby won't sleep unless held?? Help!

I've just been having the worst night/day with my little one. He just won't sleep unless he is in contact with you. I'll rock/cuddle him until he is out, but no matter where I put him down...bassinet, swing, carseat, bouncer...within an hour he is awake and fussing to be picked up. Usually even less time than that! I desperately want to get a little sleep tonight...is there *any* suggestions you may have to help? Last night the only decent nap we got was two hours cuddled up on the couch, but I'm afraid it may not be safe to make that a habit!
