How to safely use a humidifier?

I know they say it is safe to use humidifier with LO and recommend it when they are stuffy, so I am wondering about routine use. In the winter month we routinely runs ours nightly becuase our room gets so dry. Is that safe for LO, is it okay to use in place of a fan? What percent humidity would you set it at?
