Dumb diapers question

The last day or so LO has been completely soaking through his diapers. And I mean completely...he'll wake up crying and his whole backside and the sheet underneath will be wet from it. I've been making sure to point his penis down so that's not the issue. We even tried going up from newborn to size 1's this morning thinking maybe he's just outgrown them, but it happened again! Any diaper tips for a new mom? What might I be doing wrong?
