putting LO down for naps

Do you put your LO down for a nap while drowsy but awake?

There is no way this will happen here.  It works at night time when I do try it, but he fights naps so hard.  He only starts a nap in the swing or laying on someone's chest.  Does this change at some point?  I'm okay with holding him to nap, but I can't imagine doing this with a 9mo or 1 year old...
