Genetic testing

I just got a call from our doctor's office that I came back positive as a carrier for two different genetic disorders and they want me to go to a hematologist and a genetic counselor (that they are setting up for me) in order to do additional testing, talk to me about it, and to possibly test my husband.  I know when we were getting the testing done, the doctor told me not to freak out or google anything that comes back positive because it would just mean that I'm a carrier and not necessarily that our baby would have the disease. I was really hoping for a "clean bill" here.. and now I can't help but think about it. 

 Does anyone have any experience with genetic counselors? Are they doctors? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
