Stool softeners...

My doctor told me that it was safe to take Colace (stool softener). Had anyone tried these before? I've taken other brands in the past. THe problem that I have had with other brands is that they sometimes caused me to strain a lot. Do you think these are more gentle? I'm thinking of trying them out this evening.
