how do you deal with wandering at night?

We have always had a childproof cover on Ethan's doorknob so he can't wander around the house.  I don't know if we should take it off.  I don't want him to wander .  He climbs out of his bed every night and sleeps by the door. I don't know if he is scared and wants us and can't open the door.  I know that when he is potty trained he will have to be able to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.  Do your kids stay in their bed/room at night?
