Advice Please- NBR

I have two nieces, a seven year-old and four year-old. The four year-old's birthday is coming up, and based on past experience I know that whatever we buy her is going to wind up broken or gross because their mom doesn't teach them to take care of anything. Also, their mother never bothers spending a ton on our boys, even though their family's income is much higher than ours. We typically wind up with some awful clothes she found at *insert bargain store here* for 90% off or Walgreens $5 special toys.That being said, should I even bother spending a lot on her birthday gift (which would make me feel like an awful Aunt) or just chalk it up to a lost cause and get her some cheap stuff??
