Staining baby furniture

I just wanted to get your thoughts on this topic.  Online websites say all is fine with this:

We are possibly getting a crib and changing table from a good friend for free as they will no longer be needing it.  It is in good condition, the only thing is that it is a light cherry colored and we what more of a "expresso" look.  Dark stained wood.  That color will match all of the wood in the nursery.  What are your thoughts on this?  Do it and get it for free, or shell out the 250 for the crib and 250 for the changing table?
