bassinet mattresses...

So we received a bassinet from a friend..their daughter never slept in it, she went right to the crib. The brand is kolcraft and I think it is nice, however, I feel like the mattress is so flimsy/soft and uncomfortable...now I know it's not from being used...is this how bassinet mattresses are typically? Also, any one have any suggestions for new bassinet bedding that would fit this bassinet? The bedding it came with is blue and white and I would like to go with something girly.
