Groupon temptation and ? re: newborn portraits

I'm a planner...I like to plan ahead so I realize I might be a bit ahead of schedule on this one, but:

How many of you have given any thought to newborn portraits?  

I know the hospital has a photographer and they will gladly do this for us but I have also heard they are expensive and usually do not turn out as well as you might hope.

Groupon's Daily Deal for my area today is a JCPenney Portrait Studio package for 80% off!  Unfortunately it will expire on January 26 and I am due the 22nd!  I think I'd need a good month of wiggle room

If you've done newborn portraits before:

*How much will it typically cost?
*When do you plan to have them taken?
*Is it ever too early to start thinking (daydreaming) about this?
