Braxton Hicks?

I was at work tonight and suddenly became exhausted. I started having cramps which I don't really know how to describe. My whole stomach would tighten up then release and it felt kind of like period cramps. My mom told me that it may be braxton hicks but I didn't think they were suppossed to be painful? I came home from work early and am about to park it in bed for the night I guess.
