need advice about contacting grandparents

Ladies- i need advice. I found thomas's paternal grandparents address. I was thinking about sending them a letter to know that they have a grandson with some pictures. Do you think i would be over stepping my boundaries? I have mixed feelings about it because his father has pretty much ignored him his whole 5 months of life.
