Kid friendly things to do near Blowing Rock?

DH and I are thinking of taking a day trip to the mountains sometime in the next few weeks. We always go to Blowing Rock (two hour trip for us) but I'm open to other mountain areas. Maybe somewhere to pick apples or pumpkins in early October? Then have dinner somewhere and head home. Anyone up for planning our trip for us??
