Benadryl question

Can a 14-month-old have Benadryl? DD had an allergic reaction to a bug bite last week (not bad, the area just got red and swollen), but we realized that we didn't have any Benadryl in the house. Fast forward to my Target trip to look for it, and the box said that it shouldn't be given to children under 2. Period.

If you can't give Benadryl, is there something else you can give for allergic reactions? Or, are you better off just rushing your kid to the doc/ER?
