Is rear facing safer in a front end crash?

I've been reading about car seats, and why it's safer to rear face.  Most things I've read say it's safer because in a rear end crash, if a young child is front facing, they won't have the neck control for the impact which would result in serious injuries... or death.

Wouldn't that be the same for a front end crash?
