Help pls - chewing

My 10 mo old son doesn't have any teeth yet. We've tried to give him little pieces of banana and puffs - and he doesn't like them in his mouth. The few times he's had them in his mouth, he gags and spits up. Can't seem to get the process of chewing.

Do we just need to continue offering and he'll eventually catch on, or is he just not ready since he doesn't have teeth yet?
