What do/will you do to make LO's birthdays special?

Do you have any traditions that your parents did for you on your birthday?  Or maybe something that you plan on doing for your LO's birthdays?

My mom hated birthdays so she never made a real big deal out of our birthdays.  We got to pick dinner and had our favorite cake with ice cream and our grandparents over for presents.  That's it.  I love birthdays and I really want to make the whole day special for my child(ren), but I'm not sure what to do.  Any ideas?
