Any tips for the beach?

I'm having nightmares of him eating a ton of sand....Do I have to hold him the whole time or has anyone actually had a decent beach trip with a 10 month old? We were thinking of getting one of those tents so he has a bigger shaded area than with an umbrella.

We are taking a boat out to a private(ish) beach so we will be stuck if he decides to go bonkers. I'm thinking we can keep him busy though. Any good beach toys you could recommend?
