Any event planners out there? Questions for you

So, I am a teacher, although unfortunately unemployed. I have been "enjoying" my 9 week summer vacation for two years now since I was laid off and cannot find a position.

Anyhow, onto my question. I love planning events, and have recently started mulling over the idea of a career change. Friends have mentioned this to me since I can put together nice events, even in short time frames.

Problem is, I really don't know how much work this career entails and I would like some insight. Is it a hard profession to get into? What is the pay like? What experience would be needed/required?

 And, FTR, I do not think I can suddenly enter a brand new field as a newbie without experience. I am looking for insight, and if I am over my head, please fill me in since I am clueless in this new avenue.
