Sitting Up in Crib

My DD has always fought going to sleep, but will fall asleep if left alone.  Just this week she figured out how to get herself into a seated position from laying down.  This has made naptime more challenging because she sits up and then cries and cries.  One time she actually fell asleep hunched over.  Lately what I have been doing is going in there and laying her back down again, I usually have to do it once or twice.  This morning when I went in there she was so tired that she fell asleep within 30 seconds of me laying her down (I didn't even have a chance to leave the room and she was already asleep!).  I think she doesn't know how to lay herself back down once she is seated.  Anybody encounter this?  What was your approach?  Did you go back in there and help them out or is this something they have to figure out own their own?  TIA!
