How do you deal with your LO hitting?

She has been grumpy the last week and get's all excited (and appears happy) with a toy in her hand while she attempts to hit DH and I. 

We have been using the approach of a firm no and telling LO that it hurts then redirecting her to a hug or a toy.

Obviously, as a first time parent, we have no clue if we are doing the right thing.
