Books - Main Character

When choosing books for LO, do you take into account the gender of the main character? A co-worker told me she found a book that she almost bought for DS but didn't because it had a girl as the main character. When her DD was young she always chose books that "starred" a girl. That thought had never occurred to me. I pay attention to the colors/pictures and the story, but I don't think I usually notice the main character.
