bf strike?

My 10 month old son suddenly stopped breastfeeding over the weekend.  His gums are swollen and he's been cranky, but we took him to the doctor and he checks out ok.  The doctor said that I had done my motherly duty and that my son has just weened himself.  This could be the case as my son is increasingly more interested in feeding himself and drinking from a cup.  However, my instinct is that something else is going on.  Has anyone ever dealt with a breastfeeding strike and if so, how did you overcome it?
