Need creative baby gate idea

Our stairs going upstairs are open to the living room. There's a wall on one side of the stairs and no wall/no banister on the other side, it's just open. Last night DS got to the FOURTH stair while I ran up to throw a box of diapers in the closet, he was cruising! On his way to the fifth as I was heading down to grab him. So I need some creative ways to block off the stairs, we can't put a traditional one up because of the lack of a second surface to put it up against. We thought about a half circle one and block the whole area, but there really isn't enough room in that area to do that.. what do you think?
