Opinion: Car Seats in Convertibles?

The reason I ask is we have an SUV that's a gas hog and we're taking a family trip that's about 2 hours away. We've been using our BIL convertible as a second car because he wasn't using it and didn't want it to just sit in the driveway. Anyways, we're thinking about using that for the trip since it would be better on gas mileage. But I'm nervous about putting the carseat and baby in a convertible, what are your opinions? Safe? Not Safe?
