cakes on the first bday!

I want to make my sons cakes starting from now till hes older. But I want them to be super cool! So that gets me to my question...How hard is it to make a cool cake? Like one with fondant or just where you decorate all over with the little star looking things, where you get the special bags and decorating tips. I am thinking maybe cars?!? But you have to use a lot of red dye and I don't like that idea too much....hmmm. Anyone a great cake decorator?!
