Introducing texture

How did you go about introducing texture. My 9 month old doesn't like any of the baby foods with texture. I've tried several brands. I've also tried mashed avocado, puffs, baby mum mums, biscuit crumbled into little pieces. He doesn't gag on it but for the baby food and avocado he just starts fussing and won't eat it. The puffs and mum mums he spits out.  I don't remember how I introduced texture with DS1 but don't remember having these issues. Any ideas?
