TTM about enhanced licenses (nbr)

Does anyone have one?

Basically my story is that I never updated my passport after I got married. So now I have a useless passport and a trip planned to see a concert in Canada in July. 

The thing that worries me is this: The passport update (with expediting) is $60 and takes 4-5 weeks (not enough time).

The license is $45 and takes 2-3  weeks.

For some reason the "too good to be true" adage is ringing in my head. So I'm just wondering if anyone travels into Canada or Mexico regularly on one of these licenses, and if it truly is "the same".
