Thoughts on a blankie?

So, my son only naps of sleeps when I put a blankie over him after laying down.  He likes to suck on it, hold it close to face, etc... and I think it is very soothing for him.  He never took to a paci, so the blankie has essentially been his soother for past several months.  To date, he is fine with any blankie I give him.  Is there an advantage or reason I should designate only one blanket for him and bring it with us places, etc...
