Birthday questions

I'm thinking about doing J's birthday party as a dessert kind of thing.  We'll have cupcakes, candy, maybe cake balls, ice cream-what else would you serve?  DH's family is huge so there's going to be a lot of people and I feel like doing real food will become pretty expensive, as well as a lot of work when I'd like to enjoy the party too.  Also, how would you word that it's going to be desserts and treats on the invite?  I'm planning on having it mid day, probably around 2 so it won't be lunch or dinner time.
