Looking for NYS/Canada travel ideas

we were thinking of a week long trip within driving distance in NYS or somewhere outside Toronto but don't know where to go- the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands have both been recommended but I don't really know how to narrow it all down. 

I'm thinking a hotel or rental house- we are not super outdoorsie people but would like to walk around in nature, relax at a beach go into town for icecream etc.  I found the Sagamore but there's got to be cheaper options. 

Any suggestions even just where to look?  Any suggestions on things to do with G in Canada other than the TO Zoo and Ikea and Marine Land?
