Random question for teachers

Are you allowed to take items of distraction away from students? This happened a lot when I was a kid, I even had 2 stuffed kitties taken from me in 3rd grade! haha I got them back at the end of the day.

My SD has posted on FB throughout her school day (sophomore in HS), she states the teachers know the kids are on their phones and don't care. Obviously that is crap, texting and FB during class? That would be just rude.

Can teachers just not do anything anymore? She isn't in NY, but still...there must be some rules. Heck, she gets "dress code violations" for wearing jeans with holes in the knees.
