? Regarding court/mediation

I'm not sure exactly how this works. Do you first have to go to court and request mediation? Or can you request mediation from the start and not have to worry about going to court and all that?

I'm planning on getting a consult with an attorney ASAP, but I wanted to see what your experiences were. I have no clue what I'm doing here, and am completely overwhelmed at the moment. Also, if it matters, we live in FL. TIA!
