RSVPs.. when do you call?

I haven't gotten back RSVPs for my DDs birthday party.  At what point do I check in with people if they are coming or not?  It is less than 2 weeks away - I was thinking at maybe 5-6 days before so I have time to order the cake?

Last year I ended up getting a cake that was too big and could have saved $40, so I don't want to make that mistake again, we literally threw out half a cake.  I think I can safely assume some people have forgotten, because some of the inlaws forward  me e-mail jokes all the time but haven't responded.

Any thoughts?  Maybe by midweek if the party is Sunday?
