Do they lose rights to child at some point!?

My son's father and I split up about 4 months ago. He has showed no interest in seeing him and made it very clear he wants nothing to do with us. However, a few days ago he sent me an e-mail that basically said he felt like he wasn't ready to be a father at this point in his life (he'd rather be out partying and boinking waitresses, but that's a different post...) but that he would like to start scheduling visitation in a few years when he's at a better place in his life. WTF?!? So basically, I am curious if he doesn't see him for 3 or 4 years, can he just suddenly decide he wants visitation? Or is there something I can do to get his parental rights terminated?
